This 10-day intensive boot camp is designed to train lighting artists in cinematic lighting using Unreal Engine 5, situated around art assignments based on film genres. Through hands-on art assignments inspired by iconic film genres, shape mood, drama, and storytelling with light while simulating a real studio collaboration under the guidance of a lead lighting supervisor

What You Will Learn:

  • Advanced lighting workflows (Lumen, Ray Tracing, Path Tracing, Volumetric)
  • Theoretical foundations of realism (Physics-based lighting, cinematic cameras, film
    exposure)
  • Film-based lighting art exercises (Horror, Sci-Fi, Western, Noir, Fantasy, War)
  • Nuke / DaVinci color grading and layering (Render passes, LUTs, ACES workflow)
  • Industry-standard collaboration and pipeline workflows (Shot review, dailies,
  • previsualization)
  • Finalizing Shot Lighting (Refinement processes for a professional finish)
  • Mastering Unreal Render Passes (Utilizing path tracer, Megalights, and Post-process
    techniques)
  • Render Passes and Composition

By completing this course, artists will master real-time cinematic lighting workflows, gaining the skills needed to work at film and AAA game studios.

Bootcamp intro

Lesson plan

Each day follows a structured learning approach:

  • Morning Lecture – Focus on Unreal Engine’s technical aspects
  • Technical Deep Dive – Theory behind realism and cinematic lighting
  • Practical Art Exercise – Genre-based lighting challenge
  • Nuke Workflow – Color grading and final compositing
  • Studio Collaboration – Pipeline and best practices for production

Day 1: Color Workflows

Understanding color pipelines and how to use them across Unreal and Nuke / DaVinci

  • How to set your scenes in Unreal and compositing to use a consistent color workflow ACES vs sRGB workflows

Day 2: Bringing a scene to life

This day focuses on understanding light properties inside Unreal Engine 5. A lighting artist must know how different light sources behave to control mood and realism. Quite often lighting artists are asked to sell the setting and movement of a shot only with lights.

  • Physical Light vs. Game Engine Light: How UE5 interprets brightness and decay
  • Typical shot scenarios; moving interiors, lighting, fire
  • Animating lights using animation tracks

Day 3: Bringing a scene to life continued…

This day builds on the previous, jumping into a wide variety of lighting setups where we look at how animated lights help support the story and action

  • Physical Light vs. Game Engine Light: How UE5 interprets brightness and decay
  • Typical shot scenarios; moving interiors, lighting, fire
  • Animating lights using animation tracks

Day 4: Cinematic Cameras

Cinematic lighting doesn’t just depend on light sources but also on how they are captured by the camera. A lead lighting director must align lighting with the camera’s focal length, lens distortion, and exposure to create consistent visual storytelling.

  • Why focal length, depth of field, and motion blur matter are used to plus your shots
  • Applying lens aesthetics to give your images a feel as if they were lensed in real life

Day 5: Materials

Achieving realism requires understanding how light interacts with materials. A lead lighting director must ensure that roughness, metalness, and subsurface scattering are properly set up to maintain visual credibility.

Lecture: PBR Workflow & Surface Perception

  • How PBR workflows define material realism
  • How reflections and translucency effect lighting

Technical Deep Dive

  • Using Nanite & Virtual Texturing for hyper-real details
  • Screen Space vs. Ray-Traced Reflections

Art Exercise: Neon Noir – Cyberpunk Rain Scene (Cyberpunk Sci-Fi Thriller)

  • Unreal Engine Techniques: Emissive Materials, Reflection Captures
  • DaVinci Resolve: Teal & magenta futuristic grading
  • Studio Collaboration: Cloud-based dailies in Evercast
  • Film Reference: Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Days 6-10: Final Cinematic Scene

Over the last five days, artists have applied everything learned to develop a final cinematic sequence, ensuring they master:

  • Lumen-based real-time lighting
  • High-end cinematography with lensed camera techniques
  • Volumetric atmosphere and optimized ray tracing
  • ACES color grading for film-like contrast
  • Finalizing shot lighting for a professional finish

The final project is reviewed in a studio setting, using Perforce, Unreal Sequencer, and Nuke / DaVin.

Final Outcome: A Studio-Ready Cinematic Lighting Portfolio

Who is it for

This boot camp is ideal for artists and professionals looking to elevate their fighting skills, whether for films, cinematics, or high-end visuals in Unreal Engine.

By the end of this course, you will have a specialized understanding of digital lighting tools, a strong artistic eye for color, contrast, and balance, and the ability to create compelling, cinematic images in Unreal Engine.

Prerequisite skills
  • Lighting in Unreal using Lumen and Path Tracer.
  • A basic understanding of compositing software, such as Nuke, DaVinci Resolve, or similar programs, is recommended.
  • Familiarity with Unreal Engine, either through personal practice or by completing the 5-day “UE Fundamentals” course with Jan Adamus at ANOMALIA, is required.

Where will this get you

All participants will get well-respected qualifications within the industry, demonstrating they’ve studied an industry-based course under expert supervision and have the practical, hands-on skills to continually grow as professional games and VFX studios are looking for.

The labs broadened my horizons, and I learned more than expected before my first visit to Anomalia. Before attending the first course, I could draw and animate in 2D at a decent level. Now, I grasp the basics of 3D and regularly apply Unreal Engine 5, and my level of 2D animation, writing, storyboarding, and designing skills has significantly improved. Additionally, the in-person format of the courses provides an invaluable opportunity for personal contact and networking, which one can benefit from for years to come.
I had no experience with UE5, just industry-standard software such as Maya, etc. Anomalia Labs involved me in creating the Unreal Engine from scratch. I could quickly develop my skills in a professional environment with high-end professionals from abroad. These courses include not only skills but also networking. Right after the lab, I landed a job as a layout artist for an upcoming feature film. All layout work on this project is done in Unreal.
