This course will instruct you on creating visually exciting real-time VFX using Niagara in Unreal Engine while exploring opportunities to incorporate Houdini simulations to add more dynamic control and creativity to the final look of your VFX.

You will explore the specific particle VFX techniques with Niagara inside Unreal Engine while also creating Houdini simulations without getting overwhelmed by the array of technical options in either software.

You will examine the techniques for creating VFX for both environments and characters in a realistic and stylized way and best practices for ensuring your VFX is optimized for a real-time setting.

On completion of this course, you will

  • Understand what types of source art are required to create visually exciting VFX .
  • Be able to create Houdini simulations for use in Unreal Engine.
  • Create both Environmental and Character VFX that clearly communicate visually to the person playing the game.
  • Understand how to build procedural workflows both in Houdini and Unreal Engine.
  • Learn how to optimize your VFX to perform proficiently and economize on memory costs in a game setting.

About the course

You will be learning the basics of building real-time VFX with Niagara in Unreal Engine while developing an understanding of procedural workflows.

You will create simple yet effective Houdini simulations that we can use in our Niagara particle systems to achieve real-time results and build workflows that are procedural and easy to art direct.

You will build our knowledge incrementally over the course, starting with fundamental Niagara techniques and concluding with more involved VFX incorporating multiple systems, materials, simulated elements all optimized for game play.

The goal is to gain a better understanding of what makes a visually exciting, optimized real-time VFX while learning techniques combining both Houdini and Unreal that will be sought after VFX skills in the game industry.

You will come away with show reel worthy examples of real-time VFX that represent examples of characters and environmental VFX that reflect the material we covered, and the techniques learned in both Unreal Engine and Houdini.

Anomalia was crucial in shaping my professional career. It gave me the knowledge, experience, and mindset of a creative professional in animation and multimedia. Also, the contacts and relationships I made during the Anomalia courses vastly improved my chances of getting jobs, as Anomalia was often a direct source of them.
I had no experience with UE5, just industry-standard software such as Maya, etc. Anomalia Labs involved me in creating the Unreal Engine from scratch. I could quickly develop my skills in a professional environment with high-end professionals from abroad. These courses include not only skills but also networking. Right after the lab, I landed a job as a layout artist for an upcoming feature film. All layout work on this project is done in Unreal.
