Adam is a fantastic mentor — he shared his experience generously and clearly. On top of that, the group of participants was a real community; we connected well personally, and the attic space at GASK was an exceptional place to work.

Most narrative designers learn writing. Few learn development. Professional narrative emerges through collaboration, iteration, production constraints, and hundreds of creative decisions made long before a single line of dialogue is final. That’s what this lab recreates. Five days inside a professional narrative team.

Led by veteran game writer and narrative designer Adam Miller, whose credits include Destiny 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and acclaimed Telltale series, this five-day lab recreates the collaborative environment in which game narratives are actually developed.

Working in small teams, you’ll take on a producer-defined project brief and develop it under real creative and production constraints. Rather than building a personal portfolio piece, you’ll experience the process studios use to turn an initial concept into a playable narrative experience.

Adam works alongside the teams as mentor and narrative director, challenging ideas, providing direction and helping you make stronger creative decisions throughout the week.

By the end of the lab, your team will have taken a project from brief to a demoable narrative slice.

Adam Miller on what the industry is missing

“I get a lot of people who I hire or work with who I think, ‘this person isn’t good in the room.’ They don’t know how to pitch ideas, talk through ideas, develop characters as a team. That’s what we do in this space.”

Why this lab is different

Writing is only part of the work.

Most narrative development happens while evaluating ideas, redefining scope, responding to feedback and balancing creative ambition against production reality.

That’s difficult to teach in lectures.

It has to be experienced.

Inside the studio

You’ll join a small narrative team from day one.

Each team receives a production brief prepared by Adam.

You’ll analyse the brief, define the player experience, pitch ideas, challenge assumptions and iterate throughout the week.

Adam doesn’t teach from the front of the room.

He works alongside the teams as narrative director and mentor.

The week ends with a production sprint that transforms your work into a demoable narrative slice.

How your practice changes

After five days you’ll be able to:

  • Develop narrative inside a multidisciplinary team.
  • Turn production briefs into playable narrative.
  • Make stronger creative decisions under production pressure.
  • Balance ambition against scope.
  • Integrate narrative with gameplay.
  • Use AI to accelerate production without replacing creative judgement.
  • Pitch, defend and refine ideas like a professional narrative team.

Who is it for

You already understand interactive storytelling.

Now you want to experience how professional narrative development actually works.

This lab is designed for narrative designers, game writers and game developers with a foundation in interactive narrative.

If you’re new to the field, start with Interactive Storytelling for Screenwriters.

If you’re looking for professional calibration rather than production practice, choose Inside Narrative Decision Making.

What you leave with

You won’t leave with another course certificate.

You’ll leave with production experience.

Your team will take a project from brief to a demoable narrative slice.

You’ll also leave with:

  • experience working inside a professional narrative team
  • a production workflow you can apply immediately
  • practical experience using AI as a production accelerator
  • stronger judgement under production pressure
  • a portfolio piece that demonstrates how you think—not just what you write

Because narrative isn’t written.

It’s developed.

If I had to compare this course to other bootcamps I've taken through the ANOMALIA program in the past, this one was hands-down my best experience. As a group, we all clicked really well, and Adam was generous not just with consultation on our projects — adjusting to each person's level and experience — but also with his time outside the sessions. The overall experience was extremely positive. I'm leaving with material I can use to present myself on the job market in PR, copywriting, and narrative design, and with a group of new friends I still stay in touch with on Discord.
