Procedural Worlds as Creative Canvases is a two-day masterclass focused on using procedural systems in Unreal to rapidly create cinematic environments. Participants will learn how to build landscapes and sets that evolve through parameter changes, apply randomness and control tools to explore different moods, and produce a “world variations gallery” from a single ruleset. The course addresses how to balance artistic direction with automation, optimize performance with LODs and world streaming, and integrate procedural worlds into Sequencer for cinematic shots. By the end, attendees will have their own parameter-driven toolkit and portfolio-ready examples of environments in multiple styles and atmospheres. The masterclass is designed for environment artists, tech artists, indie filmmakers, and educators who want to combine modern procedural workflows with cinematic storytelling.

Problems We Solve

  • “My project folder is a mess and no one can find anything.”
  • “Every artist sets things up differently, and assets break when shared.”
  • “Importing FBX files and textures takes forever, and I’m always redoing settings.”
  • “I’m scared of version control because it feels too technical.”
  • “By mid-production, my scene gets too heavy and crashes.”

Unreal Systems Covered

  • Project Browser & Templates – Custom project creation and template building
  • Content Browser – Advanced organization, filtering, and search
  • Import Pipeline – FBX, texture, and audio import automation
  • Editor Utilities – Blueprint-based batch operations and custom workflows
  • Project Settings – Renderer, platform, and performance configurations
  • Source Control – Perforce/Git integration for collaboration
  • Asset Management – Reference viewer, asset audit tools, dependency tracking

What You’ll Learn

  • Project structuring like a professional studio: folders, naming, and templates that scale
  • Content Browser workflows: search, filters, and organization beyond “dump everything in /Game”
  • Import automation: consistent FBX and texture handling without repetitive clicks
  • Editor Utilities: small scripts and tools to speed up repetitive tasks
  • Project settings tuned for film: rendering defaults, performance considerations, platform choices
  • Source control for artists: simple Git/Perforce/Diversion habits that prevent disasters
  • Asset management: how to track dependencies and prevent broken references

INTRO VIDEO

FULL UNEDITED INTRODUCTION OF 4 MASTERCLASSES

Program

Day 1 – Foundations of Procedural World Building

Morning

  • Concepts & Context
    • Why procedural systems matter for filmmaking: speed, flexibility, and scale
    • Balancing art direction with automation, when to trust rules, when to override
  • Hands-On Build
    • Introduction to PCG Graphs in Unreal
    • Building simple scatter rules (rocks, trees, props)

Afternoon

  • Landscape & Material Systems
    • Sculpting and texturing landscapes with procedural materials
    • Layering assets (grass on slopes, trees by rivers) with parameter-driven rules
  • Wrap-Up Exercise
    • Create a procedural landscape blockout that generates multiple variations with sliders

Day 2 – Advanced Procedural Systems

Morning

  • Expanding Procedural Workflows
    • World Partition for large-scale streaming environments
    • Blueprint construction scripts for modular sets (buildings, props)
    • Randomization + masks for controlling artistic variation
  • Hands-On Application
    • Build a procedural city block or forest clearing using modular rules

Afternoon

  • Optimization & Cinematic Prep
    • Profiling procedural worlds for performance
    • Using LODs, culling, and instancing for efficiency
    • Integrating procedural worlds into Sequencer for shot design
  • Final Showcase
    • Each participant presents a “world variations gallery”:
      • One ruleset → multiple moods and styles (e.g., morning vs night, realistic vs stylized)

Who is it for

Audience

  • Environment artists who want to speed up set dressing without losing art direction
  • Tech artists building procedural tools for teams and productions
  • Indie filmmakers who need to rapidly sketch cinematic spaces for storytelling
  • Educators looking to teach modern environment workflows that mix art and automation

Prerequisites

  • Intermediate Unreal Knowledge
Comfortable with the interface, managing levels, and importing 3D assets.
  • Material & Blueprint Experience
Prior exposure to instanced materials and basic Blueprint construction scripts.
  • Environment Building Familiarity
Some background in level design or set dressing, this isn’t an intro to environment art.
  • Optional Bonus Skills
    • Experience with node-based procedural tools (e.g., Houdini, Blender Geometry Nodes)
    • Familiarity with LODs, optimization, or profiling large scenes
