Generative tools can now produce visual content at scale. The result is an oversupply of aesthetically competent images with no dramatic coherence — worlds that look good but say nothing.

Character design is no longer constrained by execution. With generative tools, polished visuals can be produced instantly and at scale. The result is a flood of characters that look good but feel the same.

The Gap

Art direction is not about making things look good. It is about making visual decisions that carry meaning — about the world, the story, and the characters. The real gap is not visual skill, but the ability to shape meaning, make choices, and collaborate on a film.
Most character designers focus on style and execution. Very few can define identity — creating characters that are grounded in story, world, and purpose. The real gap is not drawing skill, but intentional design decisions that give a character meaning.
This Track addresses both: first the world that defines what belongs, then the characters that prove you can populate it with intention.

Track Logic — Why This Order

Week 1–2

Art Director on Location: From Reality to Fantasy · Tara Rueping · 2 weeks

Art direction from reality to fantasy. You begin outside the studio — field research, studying architecture, materials, spatial rhythm, cultural detail. You translate observation into a cohesive fantasy world with defined rules, visual hierarchy, and material logic.

WHAT WE TRAIN

How an art director thinks — starting from real-world observation and turning it into a system of visual decisions that keeps a film coherent, intentional, and readable. Experience a studio-like field assignment: working on location, gathering references, making choices, and shaping a fantasy world from reality.

Bootcam details

Week 3

Character Design Systems Lab · Rustam Hasanov · 1 week

Character design as a system. You design characters that belong inside the world you built. Real-world observation — posture, clothing systems, material culture — informs a lineup with cultural consistency, silhouette clarity, and functional identity.

Characters designed without a world float. Characters designed inside a world belong. By Week 3, you have a complete set of visual rules. Every character design decision is grounded in something specific. The lineup does not illustrate — it inhabits.

WHAT WE TRAIN

Character as a design system — not an illustration, but a functional identity that holds across production and stays legible in any context. Designing characters that fit a world — including direct continuity from the art direction work in Week 1–2.

Where You End Up

An art director in production — the person who knows why every visual element exists and can defend that in front of a producer. A character designer with a portfolio that shows systems thinking — read as experienced, not just talented. Able to define and direct character design choices for story and world even when working with generated output, guided by judgment, not just execution.

What You Shift (Combined)

A fully developed fantasy world system AND a character lineup rooted in that world. Two portfolio pieces that read as one coherent vision — the kind of work that signals art direction readiness, not just drawing skill.

I am a firm believer that no matter how many years you've been animating, there are always things to learn. Even though I've been working in films for a long time, I knew I could come here and get a lot out of it.

TRAVIS TOHILL

Lead Animator
Anomalia was crucial in shaping my professional career. It gave me the knowledge, experience, and mindset of a creative professional. The contacts and relationships I made during the Anomalia courses vastly improved my chances of getting jobs, as Anomalia was often a direct source of them.

DAVID SVOBODA

Technical artist
It's fun to get in this environment again because it keeps you excited about what you're doing. It keeps your perspective positive and you realize how fortunate you are to have this job.

TREVIS TOHILL

Lead animator, Epic Games
The lab-like intensive nature of the course is quite different from most and I think very helpful, as the absence of daily life distractions creates the time and focus to solve problems – and then create some more.

SOFIA LACERDA

FX artist
Bootcamp exceeded my expectations. Benoit is a great mentor; he has a great attitude. I can ask anything; he explains it very well. If someone still doesn't get it, he tries a different approach.

TOM VAJGL

Technical director, 2K Czech
The mentors are really experienced and help to transfer their knowledge directly. I don't have to spend much time searching, trying, and learning.

MAO PORRAS

VFX artist
I'm motivated the same way I was last year, except now I already know how awesome it's going to be and how much I can learn! I can't wait for another week full of teamwork, inspiration, and improvement! Character Design Labs 2023 (returning in 2024).

JOY ALISSA ERB

Character Design Artist
I attended the World Building course last year with Tara Rueping and I enjoyed it very much. I find Anomalia's environment to be very welcoming and stimulating. Therefore, I will join the World Building once again this year.

ALIDA PINTUS

Concept artist
The labs broadened my horizons, and I learned more than expected. Before attending, I could draw and animate in 2D at a decent level. Now, I grasp the basics of 3D and regularly apply Unreal Engine 5. The in-person format provides an invaluable opportunity for personal contact and networking, which one can benefit from for years to come.

JAROSLAV KLIMEŠ

2D animator
I had no experience with UE5, just industry-standard software such as Maya. Anomalia Labs involved me in creating the Unreal Engine from scratch. I could quickly develop my skills in a professional environment with high-end professionals from abroad. Right after the lab, I landed a job as a layout artist for an upcoming feature film. All layout work on this project is done in Unreal.

JAKUB BROKL

3D animator
Within two weeks I learned five or six things that would have taken me years to figure out alone.

LUKE

Animation artist
Anomalia is the only company offering a course like this. There's no course in the US that really breaks down what AI is and contextualizes it within a VFX 3D animation workflow.

LUCAS

VFX artist
The course is led by a real-life professional working on a daily basis with the world-leading VFX projects, such as Hollywood movies or Netflix shows. The conditions are excellent and two weeks are a substantial dose of training.
