3D Animation for Games

Get professionally ready as a 3D animator for the games industry!

Animators are in high demand to work in games these days. The course is an intensive program designed for 3D animators who plan to enter game industries.

About the course

You will be introduced to the art of 3D character animation while focusing on boosting essential skills and understanding of the craft. There are two aims depending on your situation as an animator

  • help 3D animators with zero-experience with games to gain understanding of what animating for games is vs. animating for films. And help them become industry ready.
  • help beginning 3D animators with improving understanding of physical motion (runs, walks, jumps, etc via loops), and have them focus on the gaming industry as their starting point as career animators and start making a living (it is likely to get a first job in games then on a feature film).

Due to the intensive, dedicated, and personal character of the course setting, you will also earn a substantial working experience in collaboration with a hosting supervisor and networking with other participants.

On completion of the course you will:

  • understand the principles of animation and the industry animation tools in 3D.
  • further enhance your animation skills and workflows of projects in games
  • understand the essence of how game engine handles animations and, therefore, how to animate for such environment (as clips)
  • test your animations in a game engine to experience your work on the fly and continue improving the final result.
  • boost your job prospects, expand your knowledge, and meet new colleagues and professionals in the field.

How it works

The program provides participants with dedicated and intensive time and space for learning by doing under the direct supervision of an experienced industry professional. Morning lectures and demos combined with quick animation exercises with set deadlines prepared by the hosting mentor start the day. Afternoons are dedicated to lab time and personal one-on-one guidance between an animator and a visiting supervisor. The classroom is available at all times. Being purposefully in a small town, animators can combine working and relaxing as they find useful for the time being.

The course program is a two-week program in which you learn how to animate walks, runs, and other action moves (loops) of your own choice, with attention to understanding and capturing believable physical action with the principals and rules of physics and delivered for a game engine performance. To know what happens in a body when in motion is the core of the art of animation, yet understanding how a game engine will work with the animations makes a fundamental difference between working for film vs. games. Dedicating full two weeks will develop an animator’s muscle memory and automate his/her workflows, like a grammar of the language of animation.

The animations will be evaluated and tested inside an Unreal Engine 4. You will import the animations into a pre-set environment and interactively move with the character to see how your work performs as a library of clips (loops) operated by the engine on the fly.

In this course, you will:

  • Animate convincing character cycles with weight and personality to keep gameplay engaging
  • Learn the key workflow to migrate your animation from Maya to Unreal Engine 4 – the standard workflow for game animation studios!
  • Understand how your animation plays within an actual game engine, an essential skill for professional game animators.
  • Navigate your animated character through an obstacle course with a game controller!
  • Learn how to work with motion capture data for game animation. The program includes a visit of a mo-cap studio.
  • Get an introduction to animation in Motion Builder, which is a tool frequently used in the game industry besides Maya. This skills will expand your job prospects in the world of games

WHY THIS IS A RESIDENTIAL AND NOT ONLINE COURSE

The advantage of this course, as compared to online training, is that you will get direct interaction with the mentor, with dedicated answers, tailored to your needs. This will not only give you the chance to build on your own strengths quicker, but also to lean out and clarify immediately the concepts that would otherwise take days to grasp.

A residential course for 2 weeks provides you with such an intensive, creative, inspirational and mentored environment, your brain will be exposed to such pressure, it will adapt to embracing new skills and concepts much faster then working home alone.

You will also benefit from a strong interaction with other students. Having different views on how to tackle a problem is key in learning this software, as more often than not, there are many different ways to achieve the same thing in animation. So this will give you the chance to challenge yourself with each other and learn faster and more efficiently.

On-site networking has proven to be one of the most valuable assets coming form our residential programs.

Where will this get me?

All participants will get well-respected qualification within the industry, demonstrating you’ve studied an industry-based course and have the practical, hands-on skills studios are looking for.

Our students go on to work in many areas of the industry. See some of their success stories.

You can consider junior level opportunities as 3D character animator on completion of the course.
