My name is James Thompson and I was a freelance rigger before going to Anomalia but with the techniques I learnt and feedback I was able to apply everything to my new show reel which landed me a job at Framestore, which I’m sure wouldn’t have been possible without Anomalia under my belt.
WHAT WE THINK ABOUT JAMES
ANOMALIA features its hero James Thompson who has joined us in 2013 taking Advanced Cartoon Rigging Lab with Josh Carey and right after ANOMALIA was offered a position at Framestore in London.
The great thing about James is his hard working attitude and passion he seems to find in delivering the art of technical direction on CG projects. The course was really a big boost for him since the laboratory style gave him a new scale for exploring original ideas and testing it on exercises with the top supervisor from Reel FX. He is also very social and fun to be with, which we strongly consider as a must have skill for this field.
We also asked James to share his experience with you:

While looking for a course I wanted the experience of learning from industry professionals to make sure I was following the correct conventions and help develop new techniques. Most courses are either online with pre-recorded videos or a few live lectures for an exorbitant price. However Anomalia is for a great price, spanned over 2 solid weeks and is taught by the industry’s finest talent so it really does tick all boxes!
Learning while living in Litomysl was truly a great experience, the town and countryside is beautiful and the other students are very talented and driven people. By living and learning together Anomalia creates a unique experience where you soon find yourself learning, eating, drinking and bowling each day with your fellow students and mentors that soon become good friends.
The things taught at Anomalia are so advanced and relevant to industry it would have taken me years to discover and learn myself through other courses. Josh Carey who taught the advanced cartoon character rigging 2014 was able to explain these complex techniques but in a simple and easy way to understand and follow. The tutors are there for 2 weeks as well so you have ample time to get all the help you need with the work but also any other help or information or tips like your show reels or how to apply in industry.
Anyone looking for a course to expand their skills should definitely have Anomalia as their 1st option. I can honestly say that it has been a life changing experience and hope one day to go back and learn and make new friends again!
I make rigging tutorials on the side and hope to include some of the new techniques learned from Anomalia so please check out my youtube channel where have my showreel that contains some of the work learnt at Anomalia.
